48HFP Filmmaker goes to Sundance
Sundance Film Festival. It's one of the most internationally acclaimed film festivals in the world. Many filmmakers dream of one day having a film at Sundance. For 48HFP filmmaker Bryant Mock, that dream has come true.
Des Moines 48HFP filmmaker Mock worked on the film Prairie Love that was recently featured as part of Sundance's NEXT competition for low-budget indie films. The film centers on the relationship between a woman who has recently been released from prison, and a stranger who has stolen the identity of her boyfriend pen-pal. Prairie Love received its world premiere screening several weeks ago at Sundance. It was featured in the Huffington Post and reviewed by the Hollywood Reporter. We were able to get in touch with Mock after the festival to talk about his experiences.
What sort of work did you do for the film?
I was a producer on the film. Producing a low budget film means a lot of things. I would often go from finding things needed for the shoot to art department, wardrobe, gripping, and even playing a small role in the film.
Was there a point when you realized you were working on a really great project?
The shoot was very difficult in that we were in the Minot, North Dakota area Dec - Jan of 2008. A lot of the film takes place outside in the elements. It was a 'character' in the film itself. Needless to say shooting in -30 with windchill was challenging. That being said our crew was small and we had a great team effort. The acting really made it feel special and our DP Lawrence Schweich is a master at his craft. I would say it really hit home that we were on to something once principal photography started.
How was your first Sundance experience? What was it like seeing your film and being surrounded by brilliant filmmakers from around the world?
Sundance was simply amazing. Being around a collective group of people who share the same passion as you in such numbers is exhilarating. There is so much positive energy. When you're an independent filmmaker you're constantly being challenged with budgets and the restraints of your independence.
It's great to be around all those people who have done it like you. Sundance really has it going on for the indie filmmaker in that it really is about independent film. Yes, there are the 'big' budget indies but most of the films are not. They cater to the filmmakers with workshops, support systems, and having it in Park City which is a magical place in itself.
Do you think having a lower budget helped or hindered you? Do you think it's easier to make a film with a larger budget?
Obviously having more money for a film makes it easier, I think. It gives you latitude on having department heads or more crew and so on. Making a film for say $5 million is a challenge but making that same film for under $500K - now that's dedication. You are forced to be more resourceful and wear many hats. I think that makes you a better filmmaker. Did shooting this picture with a lower budget help or hinder? That's hard to say but for the most part I think it actually helped us. We were a small team and we were very dedicated. There was no animosity on set and it felt like family instead of hierarchy that you often find with big budget films.
Have you screened the film at other festivals? How about any plans for distribution in the works?
Prairie Love world premiered at Sundance which I have to say is a great feeling. The EP's have hired a PR firm to handle distribution and basically the future of the film. I am not at liberty at the moment to discuss those options. You may follow our website http://prairielove.com/ and see the press releases as to what moves are being made.
Now you're a 48HFP filmmaker as well--what has your experience been with the 48HFP?
I assembled a team and competed in my first 48 Hour competition at the 2009 48 Hour Film Project Des Moines Iowa. I thought it would be a good idea to see what happens when all of those crazy ingredients where combined in such a short time period. Let's face it, making films is hard enough, and doing it on such a level as the 48HFP hones your skills in a way that nothing else really can. We have a great team that I am really proud of. For everyone to give up their time and effort to produce such great things in a short time is exhilarating. We ended up winning for "Secretary's Day" Best of City-Best Actor-Best Acting Ensemble-Best Director-Audience Choice for our film. I had only intended to do just the one competition but it was so much fun we've been doing them since. We then went on to compete in the international which was great as well. Paris went on to win that one and deservedly they should of, it was a great film. Most of our team went to the Filmapalooza at NAB in Vegas that year and had a blast. I loved how Mark, Liz, Christina, and Ben organized the awards. They had other activities other than just the films that made it an overall event.
We then entered the 2010 48HFP Des Moines again and again we won Best of City-Best Use of Character-Best Use of Line of Dialog-Best Editing-Best Actress-Best Directing. We are once again attending Filmapalooza in Miami and are looking forward to a great time.
Have you learned anything from working on the 48HFP that you have been able to apply to your other films?
I think putting yourself in a position of making the best piece of film under the guidelines of a 48HFP is very challenging. I think it makes you a better filmmaker. You have to be great, fast, and everything else in 48 hours! That makes you a better filmmaker in the sense of your decision-making, economizing, and follow through. These are important steps if you want to be a filmmaker. I think overall it just works and it's a lot of fun. Even if you're not an indie or professional filmmaker by trade it's just a great way to be creative.
What's the next project you're working on?
2011 Eco Challenge!
Many thanks to Bryant Mock for taking the time to speak with us, and we wish him best of luck! For more information about Prairie Love, visit www.prairielove.com.

Just like the 48HFP, the 48 Go Green allowed them to make a narrative short film in only 48 hours, writing, shooting, and editing it. Each film was about an environment issue, which was picked out of a hat. The competition took place in-person in Atlanta, Boston, DC, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Portland (Oregon), San Francisco, and on-line everywhere else.

Pitching Your Film: The Inside Story
Larry Meistrich is founder and Chairman of Nehst Studios. He produced the Oscar-winner Sling Blade as well as You Can Count on Me, Croupier, and Belly, among many others. He created indy legend The Shooting Gallery and the innovative distribution company Film Movement.
48HFP Newsletter Editor Brian Bowers interviewed Larry about the pitch process.
As a movie producer, how often are you pitched projects?
I'm pitched all the time - at the dentist, with his hands in my mouth - at the grocery store, at my kid's school.
What sort of stage are these projects in when they're pitched? Script or treatment? Just a rough idea?
We get all types. But I want to explain that the real objective of a pitch - to us or anyone else - is simply to get them to say "I'd like to read that script." You see there are ideas and there is execution. People in the film business really buy execution. You might have a great idea, but what the producer wants to see is whether you can turn it into a shootable script. You don't need training to invent an idea, but you need lots of hours at the laptop before you can turn out a pro script - you need to be able to show the goods. We have made deals on ideas and treatments, but the writer has less leverage than when they are holding a shootable script in hand. If we have to hire someone to write from your idea that's a different value to us. Everyone has ideas. My dentist has ideas. What makes you marketable is having a great script that executes on that idea.
Tell us a little bit about what you think makes a successful pitch
A great pitch has to stand out from the thousands of pitches and scripts we see all the time. Ideally the pitch paints, in shorthand, an indelible picture of a unique main character in an unusual situation. The great pitch lets us think, "Oh, we could get that funded - that movie could make money." In order to do that, we like to see a character that a star actor will want to play. We want just enough to pique our interest so we start a dialog with you about the story and can't wait to read the script.
Who should filmmakers pitch their ideas to? Producers, directors, agents, etc.?
The term pitch - though standard in film, doesn't really capture what you need to be doing. You are "telling your story." You should be practicing telling your story to anyone who will listen - but - you really want to be pitching a qualified customer. You're not going to get many shots in front of a producer, so only do it when your project is ready. You can pitch to your friends, family and classmates for practice - but don't expect an industry reaction. An agent doesn't care about the pitch if you don't have a great draft. An agent can't sell a pitch, he can sell a screenplay. I wouldn't be pitching my ideas all over the place unless I had a strong draft of the script.
Where can they find these people to pitch to, and what is the best way to getting a pitch meeting?
The best way to get a pitch meeting is to be introduced by someone the producer knows and trusts. But that person isn't going to "use up" a favor unless your project won't embarrass him. You're just not going to get that many pitch meetings - make them count. You can also pitch your script to Nehst's on-line pitching service Pitch Nehst.
What's the best advice you can give filmmakers who have projects they want to get produced, funded, and/or distributed?
Pay your dues. Getting your script produced is just as hard as playing in the Superbowl, playing at Carnegie Hall, or doing brain surgery at Columbia Presbyterian hospital. The scripts that get bought are rarely the first script a writer has done. Just because you have Final Draft doesn't mean you are a pro - it means your work is formatted professionally. This business is as Darwinian as any - you need to commit to the work, be as ruthless as the next guy, and your planets have to be in alignment.

What I Learned from Jason Reitman
Jason Reitman speaks at Filmapalooza
Last week I was at NAB Show in Las Vegas attending Filmapalooza, the year end competition for the 48 Hour Film Project. Over 70 films from around the world were screened, all representing the Best 48 Hour Film from each of their respective cities. I had a great time watching the films, checking out the latest video gear at NAB, and of course soaking in a little bit of the Las Vegas nightlife. But the highlight of the trip for me was watching Jason Reitman speak.
Jason Reitman is the Academy Award nominated director of films such as Juno, Thank You for Smoking, and the current release Up in the Air. He flew in to deliver the keynote speech to a room filled with filmmakers from all around the world. The experience was incredible; Reitman is a very personable speaker and talks on a level that really connects with the younger filmmaking crowd. He talked about growing up in Beverly Hills, his long journey from film to medical school and back to film, and took questions from the audience.
Here are just a few of the highlights of what I learned.
Write the bad scripts first. Reitman prefers to direct films that he has also written the screenplay for because he really knows the dialogue and flow of the script will work on camera. But he didn't always write really great stuff. It took him a long time to develop his own style of writing, and he wrote a lot of bad scripts before anything worthwhile came out. An important part of developing writing skills is to really just keep doing it--get your ideas out onto paper, find out what works and what doesn't, and begin to develop your own voice.
Work with people you like. Though Reitman is not the first person to have said this, he stands by this mantra. There are tons of talented people in the world, so don't stress yourself out by working with talented people who are a pain to work with. Reitman states it best: "Do you want to be standing next to someone you hate on that day who is incredibly talented and gifted but you want to punch in the face? No, you want someone you can talk to."
Don't go for the "cool shot." Remember that the film is about storytelling, not a showcase for your camera techniques. Reitman and his regular DP like to keep each other in check, joking with each other about the "cool shots for their portfolio" when it looks like one of them may be straying from the storytelling aspect of the film in order to get too artistic with the cinematography.
There is no excuse not to make your film. Filmmaking has never been more accessible as it is now. Reitman recalled the old days when he was starting out and everything was shot on film, making for a time-consuming and expensive editing process. Now you can find a decent digital camera in nearly every big box store or electronics retailer you walk in to. All you need is a story, a camera, and a basic editing software. Reitman himself scrounged the money for his first film by selling desk calendars to his college. He challenged the filmmakers to stop making excuses and just go out and make your film with what you have.
Watching Reitman speak was in itself worth the trip to Las Vegas. He was insightful and inspiring, as well as encouraging to all of the filmmakers present. I'll look forward to continuing to watch his great films, and will hope for that Academy Award sometime in the near future.

HD Filmmaker Showdown Winner
Washington Improv Theater (WIT) won the 48 Hour HD Filmmaker Showdown with their fantasy short film, "Multiverse". "We're all still bouncing off the walls about the whole thing," said WIT's Director, Tyler Korba. The DC team was awarded a Panasonic HVX200 High Definition Camera at the 48HFP end-of-year event at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. All five of the competing teams including Cincinnati, Des Moines, Nashville and San Francisco received Avid's Mojo Accelerator and HD Xpress Software for their participation in the Showdown. They were also loaned Panasonic HVX200 HD cameras during the event weekend, which helped immeasurably in making these five beautiful HD films.
The WIT Team has competed four times in the 48HFP. Their last 48 Hour Film, Occupational Hazard, won the 2005 audience award in Washington, DC, along with awards for best direction and best film. WIT's winning HD film was shown March 11 at Cinequest. If you didn't make it to San Jose, you can see the film here.
