What Happened During Your Weekend?

The Edinburgh filmmakers share stories from their wild weekend of filmmaking. (Blogging ended shortly after the filmmaking weekend.)

One more for luck

"One more 'cos I'm an [expletive deleted]."

Those are words I won't be allowed to forget in a hurry. Having pulled Thriller/Suspense out of the hat, we knew there would have to be an action element to the film. We'd got some good driving shots but the script also required our lead actress to do a bit of running. No problem, she was game for it.

We had the shot in the bag, we still had plenty of daylight to get our final outdoor set up done, and throughout the day we had been doing 'one more for luck' on each shot. Looking at our exhausted lead (the twenty five degree heat wasn't helping), I thought about saying that was it, but instead uttered those words, "one more because I'm [not a very nice person]."

A minute later the director was yelling cut as our actress slipped, landed on her knee and then her face and ended up with some pretty nasty bruising and swelling. My first thought? 'I hope she's not too badly hurt, that would make a great shot.'

And use it we did, I'll just have to remind her time and again that the best often suffer for their art (and then I'll run away before she hits me).

That was the only sour note of what was a truly fantastic weekend for everyone involved. Through the writing on Friday night, the shooting on Saturday and the editing on Sunday we all had a great time and we'll certainly be back next year (hopefully without injuring anyone).
