HP & the 48HFP: Masters of the Short Film at CannesFriday, June 30, 2017

For the second year in a row, the 48 Hour Film Project has partnered with HP for a special branded competition in Cannes as part of the film festival. Four 48HFP teams received a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cannes for three of their team members!

This year, the theme for the competition was "The Power of Ink" and 30 film teams from around the world were asked to submit pitches inpired by the writing of Saadat Hasan Manto, one of the greatest writers of short stories in South Asian history who was a big champion of giving minority groups a voice.

Four teams (out of the 30 pitches) were selected to make their short film--Pixel Drop from Richmond, 74A from Rome, Black Salt from Mumbai, and Black Sheep Production from Rennes, France.  The teams had one month to make their film, then three members of each team were flown to Cannes and given rooms at the Oko Hotel.  On Saturday, May 20, teams were given access to HP computers and printers to complete all of the graphic elements and marketing materials for their films--photos, look books and posters.  Teams scrambled as the final seconds ticked away for them to complete their submissions.

That evening at the HP Studio in the Majestic Hotel, filmmakers and film industry professionals gathered for a special screening and awards party. This year's jury was comprised of  Nandita Das (filmmaker and Director of the upcoming feature film "MANTO"), Nicole Guillemet (Programming Director, Costa Rica International Film Festival),  Isabelle Gibbal Hardy (Director Cinema Grand Action and President of Cinémas Indépendent Parisiens), Vikrant Batra (Head of Global Marketing, HP),  and Luc Serrano (award–winning Producer and Director).

Congratulations to the winning film "VALENTIN(E)" by Black Sheep Production! Watch the film below.

Congratulations to all of the teams chosen to participate, and thanks to HP for partnering with the 48HFP on Masters of the Short Film!
