The Pittsburgh 48 Hour Film Project
What Happened During Your Weekend?
The Pittsburgh filmmakers share stories from their wild weekend of filmmaking. (Blogging ended shortly after the filmmaking weekend.)
Not so fresh or so clean
This blog post is so aptly named because, while filming this past weekend, my one crew member would throw us back into the year 2001 by randomly singing (or murmuring) the chorus of Outkast's "So Fresh, So Clean." No matter what time it was, or where we were, you would randomly hear, "Ain't no body dope as me, I'm dressed so fresh so clean." Where then I, or another crew member would reply, "So fresh and so clean clean!" It had happened so many times within in the first 24 of our 48 hours, I declared it as this year's film project theme song for our group. It's so hilariously and tragically ironic because, even though we kept singing that song, all of us were neither fresh, nor so clean at the end of the competition.
With temperatures peaking in the 80's and not having air conditioning at our headquarters, it was a hot, sticky, and sweaty 48 hours. Our only reprieve from our stifling environment, made worse by the heat radiating from our numerous set lights, were the scenes we had to shoot outdoors. Even then it wasn't much of a break since the air temperature was still hot and ever so slightly humid.
While everyone was busy packing gear, clothes for possible costumes, and other such necessities for filming, not one of us thought to grab any kind of shower supplies to bring with us to our friend's house which served as our headquarters. The problem with having 6 people, 2 cars, and only 48 hours to get a lot of work done, is that it would have been very inconvenient to drive 5 different people to their houses to shower, and we weren't given a lot of time to waste. Sure, we probably could have thought of other solutions but, to be honest, it just wasn't a priority. Besides, we would have gotten sweaty all over again shortly after showering, so what's the point?
If anything, being gross together made us all a little closer. A bond forged in sweat, only a little bit of blood, but no tears (which I think is a good thing). Throw six friends into a time sensitive film competition in the middle of summer and you'll find that not even the heat or the desire to shower will deter us from our ultimate goal. We remained focused, worked hard, and really just joked about how disgusting we felt the entire time to ease the stress caused by sleep deprivation and uncontrollable situations while filming (fighting with background noise while filming in a public park is one example).
I can honestly say that we all feel our group is like a little family. If there's anyone you don't have to feel self conscious in front of because you're greasy and sweaty and haven't showered in 2 days, it's your family.
I am beyond grateful that I got to partake in this amazing experience with my friends/crew mates. This project pushed us creatively, collectively and personally, and really challenged us in a good way. I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work with. We all really look forward to doing this again next year. In the mean time, we've celebrated surviving this competition by taking long and refreshing showers.
