1. Eligibility

The US Virtual 48 is open to filmmakers in specific US Cities as listed on the website www.48hourfilm.com. To be eligible, one of the following must be true:

  • The team leader or a team member is a resident of one of the listed cities (MSA); and/or
  • The team has participated in one of the listed cities in the past; and/or
  • The team registered for one of the listed cities as part of the New Year's 2020 promotion.
The Team Leader must be a legal resident or legal visitor of the United States or the District of Columbia. The following are not eligible: employees, contractors, directors and officers of 48 Hour Film Project, Inc. (48HFP), or the US Virtual 48HFP, its parent, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, distributors, web design, advertising, fulfillment, judging and Project agencies involved in the administration, development, fulfillment and execution of this Project (collectively, Project Parties), and the immediate family members of each (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, and spouse or step of each) and those living in their same households (those persons whether related or not who live in the same residence for at least three months during the twelve-month period preceding the start date of the Project). Outside of the United States, residency requirements may vary. Void where prohibited.


2. To Enter

To register for the US Virtual 48, follow the instructions found at www.48hourfilm.com/us-virtual. Registration is based on a first-come first-served basis and space is limited. Registration fees range from $128- $148 per team. Registration ends the day before competition begins.


3. Official Filmmaking Period

The US Virtual 48 will commence on Friday, October 16 and end on the following Sunday, October 18 as announced on US Virtual 48 webpage.


4. Refunds

In the United States, if a team (Entrant) registered during the Early Bird, Regular, or Late registration phases of the project but must withdraw, refunds will be paid on the following schedule: Notify 48 Hour Film Project, Inc. of withdrawal in writing (submit the form below) within 24 hours of completing your registration and receive a full refund; Notify 48 Hour Film Project, Inc. of withdrawal during the Early Bird or Regular registration period and receive a full refund minus a $15 administrative fee; Notify 48 Hour Film Project, Inc. of withdrawal during the Late registration period and receive a full refund minus a $35 administrative fee; no refunds less than 3 days prior to Kickoff event. NOTE: If the Team Leader is diagnosed with COVID-19, contact us to request a full refund. The refund policy may vary in other countries.

In the United States, if you paid your registration fee in January 2020 as part of the New Year's Promotion, we appreciate your commitment to the 48HFP. Your support of this community-building filmmaking event is especially important during these life-changing days of the coronavirus. In recognition of your support, in lieu of a refund, we are offering you double credit for your payment--in other words, you will be able to participate in two 48HFP events in 2020 and/or 2021. For example, you could choose to do your City 48 and the Four Points Film Project, or one City 48 in 2020 and one City 48 in 2021, or even two cities in the same year. You make the choice. A second option instead of two competitions you may participate in one competition and choose one item from the 48HFP Store with free shipping. Contact us for more information. The refund policy may vary in other countries.

I partecipanti dovranno sottoscrivere il così detto 48 Hour Film Project Team Leader's Agreement, accettandone termini e condizioni.  I minorenni dovranno esibire la firma di un genitore o di chi ne fa le veci

Le iscrizioni che non contengono tutte le informazioni obbligatorie o che non rispettano tutti I requisiti necessari, non saranno considerate valide per partecipare 48 Hour Film Project.

8. Judging of Entries

L’ammissione al concorso sarà valutata secondo i criteri di cui di seguito. 


9. Kickoff Event

I partecipanti devono presentarsi all’evento di apertura all’orario indicato.


10. Basic Requirements of the Project

Entrants must adhere to the official US-VIRTUAL Filmmaking Rules. In addition, in the Kickoff Email, Entrants will receive an assignment and be given three days to make a video (an Entry). See www.48hourfilm.com/us-virtual for details.


11. Termini di consegna del progetto

Consegnando un video 48 Hour Film Project, ogni partecipante riconosce di essere il proprietario di tutti i diritti su qualsiasi materiale presenti al concorso, compreso il video o la registrazione digitale, comprese le performance ivi contenute, con l’eccezione delle risorse messe a disposizione dal 48HFP per la realizzazione dello stesso. I partecipanti garantiscono inoltre di aver ricevuto il permesso di ogni persona ad apparire in video, di riconoscere i diritti delle Project Parties, come descritto nelle Regole ufficiali.  Inviando il proprio lavoro, I partecipanti accettano le Regole ufficiale, nonché accettano di risarcire e tenere 48HFP e i relativi Project Parties, società affiliate, direttori, agenti, co-proprietari e altri partner e tutti i dipendenti (detti anche Project Indemnitees) immuni da ogni accusa, danno, spesa, costo (comprese ragionevoli spese legali) e responsabilità e debiti (compresi i patteggiamenti), asseriti da ogni parte terza contro una qualsiasi delle Project Indemnitees a causa del materiale presentato dai concorrenti o della loro condotta durante o in relazione al progetto, tra cui problematiche legate a marchi registrati, copyright o altri diritti su proprietà intellettuali, diritto di pubblicità e di privacy o diffamazione. I partecipanti si impegnano a sollevare, risarcire e mantenere il 48HFP e le relative Project Parties immune da ogni denuncia relativa a un’infrazione dei diritti relativi al lavoro presentato dagli stessi, dovuta all’utilizzo di materiale pubblicitario, presentazioni, contenuti web o di ogni altro tipo, presentato e/o preparato da o a nome del 48HFP o delle relative Project Parties.


12. Partecipazione in più città

I partecipanti possono competere in più città e possono vincere il concorso ognuna di esse. I team possono concorrere anche in due città contemporaneamente, ma in questo caso devono comunque inviare due video diversi. 


13. Team Leader

Qualora un Gruppo di persone decida di collaborare allo stesso progetto, deve indicare un solo membro come rappresentante del team al 48 Hour Film Project, il quale dovrà accettare le Regole ufficiali e sottoscrivere il Leader's Agreement, nonché ritirare il premio a nome del gruppo. Né il 48HFP né alcuna delle Project Parties hanno alcuna responsabilità in caso di controversie tra i membri di un team nate durante o in merito al progetto. 


14. Selezione dei vincitori

Tutti i progetti verranno esaminati secondo due fasi di valutazione. In primo luogo a livello locale (all’interno della competizione cittadina) e successivamente a livello internazionale (nella competizione tra tutti i vincitori locali che avranno accesso al contest per il titolo di Best 48 Hour Film of the Year). Una giuria qualificata valuterà ogni film secondo i seguenti criteri:

       Merito artistico (es. trama, creatività, livello di intrattenimento) (45%)

       Merito tecnico (30%)

       Rispetto delle indicazioni assegnate (25%)


15. Vincitori del 48 Hour Film Project

Il lavoro con il punteggio maggiore di una determinata città, ne sarà proclamato vincitore. In caso di un pari merito, lo spareggio avverrà confrontando il punteggio assegnato dalla giuria al primo criterio di valutazione e proseguirà seguendo l’ordine dei criteri successivi. I partecipanti acconsentono a dare al 48HFP il diritto esclusivo di prendere decisioni in merito a eventuali contestazioni o controversie relative al 48 Hour Film Project, le quali sono tutte di natura incontestabile e vincolante.  


16. Winner's Prize

Teams will be placed in screening/judging groups by geographic regions. The maximum number of teams in each group will be 24. Judges will select a "Best Film" for each group and the Best Film from each group will be screened at Filmapalooza, the Annual 48 Hour Film Project Awards Weekend (date and location to be announced). All US Virtual 48HFP Best Films will be eligible to be included in the 48HFP Showcase Screening at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.


17. General Conditions

By participating, Entrants agree to these Official Rules which are final and binding in all respects. The US Virtual 48 is governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC, USA, and all claims must be resolved in the District of Columbia courts or the Federal courts located in the District of Columbia.


18. Limitations of Liability and Release

No liability or responsibility is assumed by 48HFP or Project Parties resulting from any user's participation in or attempt to participate in the US Virtual 48HFP or ability or inability to upload or download any information in connection with participating in the Project. No responsibility or liability is assumed by the 48HFP or Project Parties for technical problems or technical malfunction arising in connection with any of the following occurrences which may affect the operation of the Project: hardware or software errors; faulty computer, telephone, cable, satellite, network, electronic, wireless or Internet connectivity or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any Internet service providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled or faulty data transmissions; failure of any e-mail transmissions to be sent or received; lost, late, delayed or intercepted e-mail transmissions; inaccessibility of the Web Site in whole or in part for any reason; traffic congestion on the Internet or the Web Site; unauthorized human or non-human intervention of the operation of the Project, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering, hacking, theft, virus, bugs, worms; or destruction of any aspect of the Project, or loss, miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility or unavailability of an email account used in connection with the Project. 48HFP and Project Parties are not responsible for any typographical errors in the announcement of prizes or these Official Rules, or any inaccurate or incorrect data contained on the Web Site or social media sites maintained by the 48 Hour Film Project. Use of Web Site and the 48HFP's social media sites is at user's own risk. 48HFP and the Project Parties are not responsible for any personal injury or property damage or losses of any kind which may be sustained to user's or any other person's computer equipment resulting from participation in the Project, use of the Web Site or the download of any information from the Web Site. By participating in the Project, Entrant agrees to release, indemnify and hold 48HFP and Project Parties harmless from any and all claims, damages or liabilities arising from or relating to such Entrant's participation in the Project.
