Alumni Achievements: Greensboro Student Filmmaker Uses 48HFP Skills To Win Filmmaking ContestThursday, March 23, 2017
College filmmaker and 48HFP alumn Brendan Malone won a national college-level filmmaking contest with his award-winning short film Foodie, and filmmaking skills he picked up from the 48HFP helped get him there.
Malone, a second year Media Studies major at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, leveraged his experience working on 48HFP films to help make another short film, Foodie, as a part of a national filmmaking competition.
At the top level of the competition his film Foodie won a Silver Tripod Award for Editing, along with a Jury Award. This was Malone's first crack at this particular competition, and he attributes much of his success there to lessons he's learned from competing previously in the Greensboro 48HFP. “I've participated in the 48HFP twice, and through the program I've gotten experience I don't think I would be able to get anywhere else,“ Malone stated. After the 48HFP, the week of production for Foodie probably felt like a month.
“I would not have been able to get together my film on time if it wasn't for the experience I'd had doing 48HFP in the past. There's an energy that comes from the shared suffering of sleep deprivation that really creates strong bonds within a team and in that sense, there's a lot of similarities with the programs. There were multiple times over the production of Foodie that I was sure we weren't going to have anything to show at the screening, that we wouldn't make it to the finish line. A big fear I had going into the project was that because time was tight, we'd lose finesse and care more about if something was done than if it was done well. But that drive to get it done led to creative problem solving and wild innovations. People work harder when they know they've got less hours than fingers to make it to the finish line.“
Outside of the 48HFP, Malone likes to keep busy by writing and directing a short film each semester, including last year's Punchline and his upcoming film The Red Rockets.
