Filmmaking Rules

On this page you’ll find all the rules in regards to the actual filmmaking for the A.I. 48 Hour Film Project. Give them a read, the last thing that you or we want is to disqualify your film. They’re here to ensure fair competition and eligibility.

These rules are more about the creative part of the 48HFP. Need something else? Check out the Competition Rules!

The 48 Hour Film Project Organizers may add to or amend these rules at any time prior to the beginning of the Official Time Period.

  1. AI (Artificial Intelligence) Requirements

    Any kind of AI generation is allowed. At least 50% of the film must be created using AI. A maximum of 50% of the film may be live video footage shot during the weekend. More specifically:

    AI Footage must make up at least 50% of the film. Any footage produced, modified or edited using AI constitutes AI Footage. Live footage without AI effects may represent a maximum of 50% of the film.

    The 48HFP-AI producers will determine if an entry has met the minimum 50% AI requirement prior to judging by the independent panel.

    The use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the creation of your film is subject to the following guidelines:

    1. Anything created using AI (footage, scripts, music, effects, etc. must adhere to the following:

      1. May only use AI in ways that are legal in your jurisdiction.

      2. May not use AI to create any part of your entry prior to the Official Time Period.

      3. Must have the legal rights to all material used in your film — including AI-generated content. Any AI output that incorporates copyrighted material (like a famous actor’s face or a recognizable movie still) without proper permission is not allowed.

  2. Datas

    O A.I. 48 Hour Film Project (AI48) vai ocorrer em cidades de todo o mundo em diferentes fins de semana ao longo do ano.

    O A.I. 48 Hour Film Project decorrerá entre Sexta Feira às 19:00, hora local, e Domingo às 19:00. Este é o Período Oficial de Tempo. (Os dias em que a competição decorre podem variar em alguns países).

    A equipa / grupo participante tem de completar o seu filme / videoclip a tempo de o entregar no Dropoff no Domingo às 19:30. 

    Apenas trabalhos entregues antes do prazo farão parte da competição e serão elegíveis para prémios. Todos os outros filmes que sejam entregues no Domingo (dentro e fora do prazo) serão exibidos.

  3. Creative Process


    All creativity must take place during the Official Time Period.  Any creative work in advance of the competition weekend is prohibited. Creative work includes, but is not limited to:

    • Writing the script
    • Casting (of roles)
    • Rehearsing
    • Costume/Set Design
    • Shooting
    • Generating Film Elements
    • Editing
    • Sound Design
    • Rendering
    • Outputting to USB drive or other media

  4. Preparation

    The only work to begin prior to the Official Time Period is:

    • Organizing your AI Resources
    • Organizing Crew
    • Organizing Cast
    • Securing Equipment
    • Scouting/Securing Locations
    You may not use AI to create any part of your entry prior to the Official Time Period.

  5. Footage

    Every frame of your film MUST contain footage shot or created in the Official Time Period. This is "core footage."

    "Supporting footage," or footage shot or created BEFORE the Official Time Period (including stock footage that is part of a special effect) may be placed over or under the core footage, as long as every frame of your film contains some amount of core footage and the assembling of the core footage with the supporting footage occurs during the Official Time Period.

    Animation, titles, and/or special effects are considered core footage if it is created during the Official Time Period.

    Supporting footage MAY NOT include people or other performers unless the supporting footage was shot during a previous 48HFP Official Time Period for a previously-submitted 48HFP film.

    Still photos are permitted as core footage. The still photos do not need to be created during the Official Time Period. Note: Still photos created outside of the Official Time Period being used in a sequence to create the illusion of motion are not acceptable as core footage, but are acceptable as supporting footage.

    You must have rights to any footage or photos used in your film. This also pertains to AI footage.

    In other words, any AI generated material that uses copyrighted material for which the filmmaker does not have a release is not permitted. (As an example, using a screenshot from the movie Pulp Fiction to create a new image is prohibited.)

    A 48HFP Materials Release is required for all materials, photos, and/or footage not created in the Official Time Period.

  6. A.I. Footage Requirement

    At least 50% of the film must be created using AI. A maximum of 50% of the film may be live video footage shot during the weekend. More specifically:

  7. Kickoff Event

    Each participating Team Leader will receive a kickoff e-mail on Friday at 7pm, the start of the Official Time Period.

    • Prior to the Kickoff event, each group must submit a completed Team Leader's Agreement, signed by its team leader. A team may not participate without submitting this agreement.
    • Each group will receive the genre of its film in a random drawing.

  8. Elementos Obrigatórios

    Todas as equipas terão elementos obrigatórios que terão de incluir no seu filme - nomeadamente um género, uma personagem, um objecto e uma frase. 

  9. A personagem e o objecto obrigatórios têm de aparecer na imagem do filme.
  10. A frase tem de ser usada tal como foi definida. Pode ser falada, cantada ou escrita. Pode ser exibida em qualquer linguagem, mas se não for bem claro que se trata da frase obrigatória, terá necessariamente de ser traduzida. 
  11. Para ser elegível para prémios e classificado como um 48 Hour Film Oficial, o filme entregue tem de cumprir o género que foi atribuído à equipa que o criou e conter todos os elementos obrigatórios, dentro do período oficial de tempo e antes da ficha técnica.

  • Voluntários

    Todos os membros da equipa e do elenco têm de ser voluntários. 

  • Animal Safety

    Animal safety, like cast and crew safety, is an important part of 48 Hour Filmmaking. Films that result in the death or mutilation of an animal may be disqualified.

  • Câmaras

    As equipas podem utilizar qualquer tipo de câmara para realizar o seu filme. Não há quaisquer limites para o número de câmara a usar. 

  • Music Rights

    The use of AI-generated music is permissible; however a music release must be submitted for each song specifying the AI platform that was used to create the music. Participating groups are encouraged to work with a composer and/or musicians to write and record music for the films. It is permissible for a participating group to use pre-recorded music; however, the participating group must have the rights to any music used in its film and must provide releases for all music used. As with music, pre-recorded and/or AI-generated sound effects are allowed, but you must have rights to use them.

    Note: Song parodies (i.e., use of identifiable pre-existing compositions with new or altered lyrics or music) may not be included in the film without a signed release from the composition's rights holder. This rule applies without regard to whether the song parody arguably constitutes fair use under US or international copyright law.

  • Duração Total do Filme

    O filme terminado tem de ter de duração no mínimo 4 minutos e no máximo 7 minutos - sem incluir os créditos finais. Em outras palavras, a duração oficial do filme começa depois do cartão inicial com o logo do 48HFP e a informação sobre o filme e e acaba antes dos créditos finais. Os títulos iniciais e os créditos finais não contam para a duração mínima de 4 minutos. A história que o filme conta não pode ser maior do que 7 minutos. 

  • Créditos

    Títulos Antes do Filme

    Antes do filme começar, o ficheiro deve ter:

  • 5 segundos de negro
  • Um título com: nome da equipa, título, género, cidade e data
  • A intro animada oficial do 48HFP - OU - um título com a frase:  This film was made for the 48 Hour Film Project [year]. www.48hourfilm.com
  • 2 segundos de negro

    • A curta-metragem inicia-se depois deste conteúdo.

    Créditos Iniciais

    Depois dos 2 segundos de negro, alguns filmes começam com créditos iniciais. Não encorajamos o seu uso, mas se forem utilizados serão considerados como parte do filme, e irão fazer parte da duração máxima de 7 minutos. Além disso, se o filme tiver créditos iniciais para além do título do filme (por exemplo, os nomes dos actores, realizador, etc), terá de incluir o seguinte: 

  • um texto a dizer [NOME DA TUA EQUIPA] apresenta imediatamente seguido de a 48 Hour Film Project ou
  • um texto a dizer a 48 Hour Film Project logo a seguir ao título do filme

    • Nota: "a 48 Hour Film Project" pode ser inteiramente escrito em minúsculas.

    Créditos Finais                                                            

    No fim de cada filme, os créditos finais estão limitados a um máximo de 60 segundos. Estes 60 segundos são considerados uma duração adicional ao filme, como está especificado acima. (Ou seja, um filme pode ter 7 minutos de duração e 60 segundos adicionais de créditos finais, com a duração total de 8 minutos.)  

    Os créditos finais devem incluir o seguinte texto: This film was made for the 48 Hour Film Project. www.48hourfilm.com

    Cartões e Créditos Depois da Competição

    Para quaisquer exibições futuras da curta-metragem, seja online ou em qualquer outro lugar, os filmes têm de manter a informação antes do mesmo a dizer: This film was made for the 48 Hour Film Project [year]. www.48hourfilm.com.

  • Formatos de Exportação Aceites

    Para informações completas sobre os requisitos técnicos para a entrega do filme, as equipas devem consultar a página oficial da cidade onde participam. Se o filme não estiver de acordo com os requisitos de entrega, pode ficar de fora dos prémios. Além disso, se não for possível visionar o filme com o equipamento à disposição dos produtores do 48HFP, o mesmo pode na mesma ser desqualificado.

    A não ser que haja instruções em contrário no site do 48 Hour Film Project website, os filmes deverão ser entregues num dos seguintes suportes: 

  • (preferencial) um ficheiro Quicktime com codec legível, inserido num DVD -OU- numa USB pen.
  • um DVD vídeo que seja reproduzível num leitor

  • Submission Notes

    • We recommend that you make sound levels relatively even throughout your film. (If your film has uneven sound or sound that peaks, it may be modified for online screenings.)
    • All films received on the evening of the deadline (on-time and late) will be shown, presuming they meet the eligibility requirements.

  • Production Documents

    Each team must secure releases for talent, crew, music and locations (and any other applicable releases), which must be turned in to the project organizers with the finished film/video. The film/video will not be screened before the A.I. 48 Hour Film Project Organizers receive the signed releases. For the AI 48, Teams must submit the AI App production document and list the AI Apps and resources used to create their entry.

    • Release forms can be found on the 48HFP website.
    • Completed release forms shall be uploaded to the Team Dash on our Website.
    • Both written and electronic signatures are allowed.

  • Declaração de Compromisso

    Os participantes têm de entregar uma Declaração de Compromisso juntamente com o filme, certificando que aderiram a todas as Regras Oficiais.

  • Elegibilidade

    Para poderem participar no 48 Hour Film Project, os filmes:

    - Têm de ser um trabalho original dos participantes;
    - Não podem infringir quaisquer direitos de terceiros;
    - Têm de ser adequados para exibição (i.e., não serem obscenos ou indecentes);
    - Não podem incluir material obsceno ou pornográfico;
    - Não podem conter afirmações difamatórias sobre quaisquer pessoas, empresas, organizações ou entidades;
    -  Não podem invadir a privacidade ou outros direitos de quaisquer pessoas, empresas ou entidades;
    - Não podem em qualquer altura violar quaisquer leis e regulamentos;
    - E não podem conter quaisquer materiais com copyright (para além daquele que seja detido pelos participantes ou pelo 48HFP). 

    Filmes que contenham material proibido ou considerado inapropriado pelo 48HFP (sob o seu exclusivo critério) serão desqualificados. O 48HFP reserva-se o direito de determinar de forma definitiva que filmes serão elegíveis para prémios. O 48HFP reserva-se também o direito de recusar exibir um filme ou de fazer uma comunicação acerca do conteúdo do mesmo, antes de ser mostrado ao público.


  • Não Exibir o Filme Antes da Estreia

    Os participantes não podem distribuir o seu filme sob qualquer meio antes da estreia dos filmes. Isto inclui obviamente fazer upload dos filmes para um website. Encorajamos os participantes a fazerem um trailer do seu filme e promoverem-no com o mesmo. Este trailer deve ter, no máximo, 48 segundos. 

  • 48 Hour Film Oficial

    Para ser certificado como um 48 Hour Film Oficial, os filmes de cada equipa participante terão de seguir todas as regras especificadas. Os produtores do 48 Hour Film Project reservam-se o direito de exibir apenas filmes certificados oficialmente como 48 Hour Films.

  • Devoluções

    Nenhum dos materiais entregues (suportes ou documentação) serão devolvidos.

  • Desqualificação

    O 48HFP e a sua organização poderão, sob o seu exclusivo critério, desqualificar filmes participantes que sejam considerados inapropriados ou que não tenham cumprido de alguma forma as regras. 

  • Vencedor Oficial

    Todos os filmes certificados como Official 48 Hour Films poderão concorrer ao título de Melhor 48 Hour Film na sua cidade .
